What is Ceramic Fireplace Panels

Ceramic fireplace panels, often referred to as refractory panels, are an important component in many gas and wood-burning fireplaces.

What is refractory board?

The metal firebox is lined with refractory panels that look like masonry. These panels have high thermal properties and are typically 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch thick. There are four panels on the back, bottom and sides. They are designed to withstand the high heat of a fire and protect the metal fireboxes around them. Without this protection, heat could be transferred to the metal housing and cause it to deform, weaken, or worse, or transfer heat to surrounding combustibles, which would obviously cause a fire.

Why do they deteriorate?

Fireplace refractory panels are a common repair. They are not meant to last forever. Years of high temperatures and use can lead to wear, stress and thermal cracking, wear and pitting, all of which compromise the effectiveness of the safety barrier. They are made to be relatively easy to remove and replace. Every manufacturer sells prefabricated panels to deal with this. If the make and model cannot be determined or the fireplace is no longer manufactured, the aftermarket panel can also be cut to suit the needs.

When should Fireplace Panels be replaced?

Ideally, fireplace panels should be replaced before they completely fail. If the combustion chamber is deformed, the entire unit may need to be replaced. Prefabricated fireplaces sometimes have only a 1/2-1-inch gap between the fireplace and the surrounding structure. Warped metal is not only damaged, but may further reduce these gaps. The Chimney Safety Institute’s general recommended rule of thumb is to replace surfaces when they deteriorate by a quarter of an inch or more, or when cracks in panels reach nickel thickness. Spider cracks can be caused by physical stress and are usually not a direct safety issue. But the thermal stress will crack the panel from the outside to the inside, meaning it will keep cracking.

New refractory board:

Ceramic fiber brick panels designed to be used with stainless steel outdoor fireplace inserts add a more traditional design to outdoor fireplaces by highlighting the surroundings of realistic stacked brick masonry in the fireplace, providing a detailed background designed to perfectly highlight your fireplace and outdoor decor.

The panels are made of durable ceramic fibers. Each panel is molded from real brick to ensure a realistic appearance. They are then hand-painted individually to provide the most realistic look. Every detail has been carefully designed to ensure that your fireplace becomes the focal point of your outdoor living space!
